WHY

Music Education

Arts education is a hot topic in the increasingly- competitive education system. Art programs have been slowly diminished in favor of more STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs. Band is one of the many arts that has been affected by budget cuts. However, tests have shown that students who study the arts or play an instrument actually perform better academically. By providing free music lessons at no cost to financially struggling students, Let's Band Together reinforces the arts education that middle school students experience in the band room.

Music education isn't just a school-related topic; it's a community-wide issue. Music not only gives students an academic advantage, but also allows them to affect the community. Concerts and performances by individual musicians or school groups are social and cultural events enjoyed by all ages throughout a community.
Middle school is infamous as one of the most defining periods in a child's life. It is the transition from child to teenager and comes with new responsibilities. A peer music teacher is not only a lessons teacher for their students; they are mentors as well. All of the undergraduates have completed middle school, graduated from high school, and continued on to college. They can offer valuable advice and a listening ear to their middle school students who are currently experiencing what the undergraduates themselves once experienced.
